Episode Notes

C.W. Hawley teaches leaders how to own their time. Then she launched her own firm and found herself on her laptop on Saturday mornings, breaking the rules she built a business around. A nurse who climbed to operations VP in senior living, she could run a massive portfolio with her eyes closed. Selling herself was a different story. After a layoff, with every door she tried closing on her, she finally started Let’s Talk Time, the time strategy firm people had been telling her to build for years.

The hardest shift wasn’t the workload. It was going from a paycheck that shows up after a bad week to earning nothing unless she closes. She’d spent years teaching that dreams die between strategy and execution, then found herself stuck in that same gap. What pulled her out is what she teaches. Time management keeps you walking faster on a treadmill. Time strategy gets you somewhere. She starts with a real time audit, not the story you tell yourself about your day, then sets goals by cutting before adding and planning for the hard part before it hits. Less than a year in, she’s made her first hires and is building toward a podcast of her own. If you started a business for freedom and ended up working more than ever, here’s what she wants you to know.

1️⃣ Time freedom is earned, not handed to founders
C.W. started her firm believing working for herself meant owning her calendar. Instead she’s booking calls on Saturday mornings and on for every sales call. The freedom is real, but it comes after you build the systems, not before. Block your rest like you block client work, or the business will take every hour you leave open.

2️⃣ Your memory is lying about where your time goes
Everyone tells themselves a story about how they spend their day, and that story is usually better than the truth. C.W. has clients log seven days in real time, energy levels and outcomes included. Skip it and you’ll keep fixing the wrong problem. Track it as it happens, then build your plan around what’s actually there.

3️⃣ Cut something before you set your next goal
SMART goals tell you if a goal is sound. They don’t tell you how to get there or what has to go first. C.W. starts every goal with elimination, whether it’s a distraction, a task you haven’t delegated, or a belief holding you back. Add without subtracting and you’re just stacking more on a full plate and walking faster on the same treadmill.
